Illustration Friday - Aging

This week's Illustration Friday theme is close to my heart. As I stated in "My Inner Gizmo Workings" number 31, dated Wednesday, May 11, 2005, I am drawn to the elderly and those who are in need. I have a grandmother who is 95 and a great aunt who is 93 and they are very near and dear to me. Growing up, I watched them dress in the most beautiful Jackie O style, complete with pearls, gloves and hat with shoes and handbags to match. Of course they were much lovlier and slimmer than this character illustration. I loved the fabrics their clothes were made of, beautiful woven linens and wools, heavy taffets and decorative velvets, fine cashmeres and the most wonderous silks. In their early days, they had the tiniest of cinched waists and I have been fortunate to have pieces of their lovely wardrobes passed to me, some of which I can still wear.

One of the best things about this topic are the wonderful stories people are sharing!
I like this little lady. I too remember the days when the "aunties" would dress in the most wonderful fashions, the hats, the gloves and of course the pearls. :c )
your story and drawing bring to mind photos I have of my grandmother dressed in a similar fashion. I haven't looked at them in years and thank you for the reminder !
Nice illo, thank for sharing your story.
This is fantastic Maggie.
I have a few dresses in my closet that are "vintage". I bought them at a used clothing store when I was very skinny :) I wore them to work every week! They don't fit anymore, but I just can't part with them!
Lovely lady :-)

Wonderful illustration. I too had one of those 'aunties'. She made her own clothes and always had a perfectly matching set of the latest fashion!
i do believe this is one of my favorites...the textures and background are all relevant without being derogatory...who says getting old is lame?!
cheers

Great pic! She's got such character. Plus I just love the way you mixed drawing and collage -- this is a technique I've been thinking about for a while, but have not yet mastered. You've done a great job of it.
Great coat and hat, very elegant.
Thank you everyone for your warm comments. I think I hit a soft spot in each and every one of you...it seems we all can remember an auntie or grandmother who dressed in the height of fashion of their day, or had a similar garment in their closet that was bought or passed on to them. What will our children or future generations say about our clothing style? Will we have made such a glamorous and indelible statement?
As they say, a woman just gets finer with age and I am all for it!
I like it! Am I right in thinking "pearls before swine", age before beauty" stuff when seeing the background or am I just weird?
Right on Jules, great minds think alike! ;)
What a sweet layd and story :)
