Starbuck's Break

6/17/05- When it gets so busy at the office, I often take time to stop at the local Starbuck's during my lunch to sketch, relax and unwind. This particular Starbuck's seating is set up rather oddly so it is hard to sketch people from a frontal view without their knowledge. Last Friday, a gentleman was sitting across my left shoulder just 4 feet away and didn't have a clue that I was sketching him. He was dressed in business attire; a starched crisp blue shirt with white collar and cuffs with the most incredible cuff links (which I did not draw-but wished I could ask him about) and navy dress pants with black polished loafers. His head was shaven smooth and gleamed in the overhead lighting, which I would have loved to have spent time capturing but did not have the luxury of time on my side. Another patron walked by and commented, "bless you, such a talented artist", and the gentleman I was sketching never looked up so I was safe.

Summer Time

Since I posted so late for "digital", I am again going to post this for IF's "summer" theme, with hopes of finishing another idea I have in mind some time this week.

I grew up on the Great Lakes of Michigan and spent every day on the beach hanging out with my friends. Now, my children do the same. When you live near the water, your summers are spent swimming, sunbathing, boating, skiing, windsurfing, bonfires and picnicing.

I miss living on the Great Lakes of MI and the beautiful summer days spent lazing in the sun. We are planning a 2 week trip home at the end of June and I can hardly wait to sit on my parent's deck and watch the ships go by.

You may have heard of the "Edmund Fitzgerald" a huge ship that sunk during a terrible storm in Lake Superior in 1975. All 29 crew members died. There was a song created by Gordon Lightfoot called "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" (1976 Moose Music, Ltd.) One of my parent's close friends, "Bill" worked on a similar ship at the time, so when this happened we were very concerned as to his safety. Remembering all this now brings a moment of silence and reflection of those who lost their lives and the families they left behind.

What kind of memories of summer do you have? I would love to hear about them.

Busy as I am, I always try to stop into Starbuck's for a latte break and some sketching. This time I tried just straight line drawing, of course taking my pen off the paper occasionally. I like the effect, very abstract. Many Starbuck's customers are often "lapping" as I call it. Busily working away on their wireless lap tops on some important work or other. I am always curious as to what they are working on but never have the nerve to ask.

IF's Digital Theme

Not quite finished, but I still wanted to get it posted. We've come a long way in from the black and white days of photography. Now the industry standard is digital.
