IF's "Sour"
For Illustration Friday's "Sour." My husband and I enjoy going to our local Barnes and Noble Bookstore to read and hang out in the Starbucks coffee shop there. I always bring a sketchbook and enjoy sketching the people reading. Unfortunately, on this particular evening, the woman who I was sketching glanced up and gave me the most sour look I have ever seen. Of course I immediately stopped sketching her and she stared me down until I had to look away. I stopped sketching for a while but continued (I was halfway through my sketch!) when she wasn't looking though she kept glaring at me from time to time with eyes that looked as if they were shooting daggers. I thought she was quite an interesting subject with her eye glass chains dangling but I fear she didn't find me as interesting. At the onset, I thought she was going to get up, lunge at me and grab my sketchbook and destroy it. It was the first time I felt like that of a protective mother bear over her cub, in this case the cub was my sketchbook which holds some of my most precious drawings. Out of respect for her discomfort, I captured only what I needed to finish and put my sketchbook away and enjoyed the rest of the evening reading with my husband. Garden
 For IF's "garden."
Spring is fast approaching and I can't wait to work in our gardens. Last weekend the temperature on Saturday was 65 degrees. I wanted to get my shovel and wellies out and start planting. Right now it is 11 degrees with a biting north wind. I think my planting days are still far off in the distance though one can dream and prepare. I think I'll pull out my seed pots and start there, maybe that will encourage spring to come sooner. And another, older illustration that fits this theme well, "roots."Labels: garden, Illustration Friday, Maggie Summers, Margaret Albert Summers, pansies, planting, poppies, spade, spring, wellies
Theory
While waiting in line to have my vehicle washed yesterday, I did a quick sketch in semi-blind contour of the car ahead of me going through the car wash. It occured to me that my illustration fit the theme for this week's Illustration Friday word "theory." Here's the true fact and theory behind getting my car/vehicle washed. Every time I wash my vehicle it ultimately snows or rains right afterwards. It's the weather theory of "I-know you will, so I will". The weather and I don't have a great relationship when it comes to washing my vehicle. Today it is suppose to snow about 1 inch. The dark clouds are looming in the sky. That means I won't make it to work with a clean vehicle again tomorrow as the roads will be covered with sand and salt-it never fails! Happy Birthday My Sweet Valentine!
My first son was born on Valentines Day and so this day is one of a kind and very special for me. He has his own home now so I called him to wish him a happy birthday much earlier than I normally would. I knew he was not awake and had every intention of leaving him a voicemail. I was quite silly in my message and I told him that prior to his birth he had kept me up all night and what time he was born, very early in the morning, so I thought I would call and wake him up to tell him how much I love him and I wasn't about to wait a minute longer. He said he really enjoyed my message and said he didn't know what time he was born at that time in the morning. In his baby album we even have a photo of the clock at that exact time. Funny, I guess I never told him. I think I will get the kids baby books out and share some other facts with them that they don't know surrounded the time of their births. Illustration Friday ~ Visitors
We had visitors swim in this past week to help Captain SeaCroft in his quest to clean up the sea: Boris Blowfish, Jasper Jellyfish, BuckStar (and you thought I was going to say Starbucks didn't you?) Clam-mity and Corabell Clownfish. I think I'm in the sea, snail and bug mode of illustrating right now. This illo is not part of the original "captain" concept but one I've had in my sketchbook for some time. These cheery fellows were just wiggling off the page saying "pick us to be your visitors please!" Illustration Friday ~ Captain
I'm dreaming of captains manning their underwater armies fighting to keep the seas clean. This is only a portion of the actual concept for "captain" however my time is very limited over the next couple of weeks, so I am posting just a vingette of the complete scene. The illustration I indicated in my previous post is still not finished but I'm enjoying the subject so much. I'll give you a hint...it too has an underwater feel to it. I guess I must be dreaming of a vacation by the sea! Finishing it will have to wait though as my husband's parents are coming from out of state for a visit tomorrow. Working
I'm working on a really fun illustration for Illustration Friday's "emergency" and I hope to finish it by tomorrow night. If not, please check back here for the finished illo. Labels: Illustration Friday

Illustration Friday's - Cars
Riding in cars. I'm not crazy about riding in the back seat of a car with anyone. I get a closed in feeling and I don't like it but I can do it. If the car is large and roomy I don't have a problem with it at all. I just like a lot of window to look out of. This was a quick sketch I did of Steven, our driver when we went to Kansas City on business a few weeks ago. My hand was a bit shaky; trying to draw in the back seat of a car is no easy feat.
